In learning about digital citizenship, I have realized that there are a lot of aspects that are not taught to our younger generation and honestly some of my own peers. We fail to realize the consequences to our actions and word until its to late. I have learned that we should not trust everything and that in order to live in our community we are expected to learn the norms of using technology. My biggest accomplishment in this course was creating videos on my understanding of digital citizenship. It helped me to not only gain more knowledge about the concept but put it in a way others may gain more from watching. The challenges in this course that I faced was time as usual. Ive realized that a lot of my courses require us to read and reflect on the reading and videos we watch. There is sometimes so much information I get overwhelmed but I guess I rather more than none at all to refer back to when I am in need of gaining more insight into the concepts to explain it to my students. My best work was probably the very first video I created about how a digital footprint can be unintentionally and intentionally made negative. It referred to people who make comments about something and do not realize its wrong or do not understand what it could possibly effect in the long run. The grader said it was engaging and edgy and I took that as a complement. I think the video really outlined the butterfly effect and how one comment or photo can be shared online and thus in instants shared to hundreds of people. When people understand that this is really a small world and there is bound to be a friend of a friend that has ties to a person you are talking about or have done wrong to, it cause consequences that can be utterly devastating. I thought it brought to life real instances of situations that can or have occurred. This course related to almost everything I have done on the outside of this classroom. For instance Being a teacher I have had to deal with bullying face to face and through snap chats, facebook and text messages. I have had tons of instances where I have had to research or use information from a reliable source and use it to teach my students. I could also say it applies in the mere fact that I use technology everyday and also have social media accounts that I must stay safe on and be cautious about who I talk to or what I post.
Cyber-bullying is and will always been an issue until we understand the power we have with our words merged with the power of the Internet or devices that create opportunities for instant sharing and viewing. I believe we cannot solely put the blame on kids or those in the school districts. Let us be honest, with instant fame now a days, where students and adults get the chance to share their ideas or talents, or just want to give people a reason to laugh, we encounter situations like slap cams or videos where students eat hot peppers, talk about people's clothing or set themselves on fire. Let us not forget the music our kids listen to that talks about the way we dress, or introduces stereotypes of the way certain races act. We are surrounded by unlimited access to positive and negative things all around the world not just in our own backyard. Our kids see adults making videos and only want to emulate what they see and have fun just like the bigger kids or adults they see on television or social media sites. It truly scares me to think about how many times adults have said do as I say not as I do, meaning they want you to be better then them with handling a situation but will not be the bigger adult or refrain from these bad actions or words. We teach our students how to act by what we show them and if we want things to change we can not wait for our students to just do the right thing. we as adults , as a community must step in , model the appropriate ways ,and provide support to our students.
The most challenging part of using technology , is that many people have mastered the act of becoming someone else. some people do this as a way to cope with being depressed about their own lives , while some people do it just to have fun. Thus we have to educate our students that everyone can not be trusted and that sharing personal information, where you work, how old you are, even small things like what your room looks like , gives people a way into your life and provides opportunities for others to invade your privacy and find ways to torment them. After reading several articles, I have learned that there are a lot of cyber-bullying method's. Flaming is the aggressive act of communication between two or more people which is probably what we see the most. There is trolling and outgoing which refers to someone gaining direct access to you and trying to wind up others to do immature and mean acts toward someone. Impersonating is where people gain access and act like they are you to where they can message your friends or post immature, dumb and mean things about you to where people think its you. I think this type of bullying is one of the most scariest ones because people can write whatever they want and all your friends and family could think its you. Thus making it hard for people to trust or associate themselves with you based on how much harm is done. All in all I think as we keep growing in social media sites and technologies, we have to educate ourselves on the power our words and actions are especially on the Internet because they can not be erased and could cause a lifetime of hardships, bullying, and loses including lives. Overall educating each other, staying safe by not sharing personal information or setting our privacy settings will help us fight cyber bullying. In schools and with other adults we should work on finding the appropriate people to talk to and learn how to stay safe and fight off all types of bullying. Due to the increasing amount of fast and easy access to materials, who can honestly keep up with all the brands and ideas that are brought up in the world. I think of it as first come, first serve when trying to create new and innovative ideas or literary works. After reading and listening to a few videos on copyrights, fair use, and the certain types of licenses there are, I can truly say I had no idea how deep the concept really goes. The copyright was made to allow the advancement in arts and other works. If we as people believe in the growth mindset then, we are looking for new and innovative things to improve on our situations. Therefore, we are able to use literary works for specific reasons but have to make sure we give credit where it is due. As a teacher, we deal with books and worksheets that we copy or buy from others to use in our classroom and thus have to be sure we are following the fair use policies. I agree with the policy that states you cannot copyright facts like the date someone was born or if they were married and divorced four times. I have learned three things from the following informational videos and articles, there is a difference in authors when produced for or through a corporations, money and credit are the grounds for these copyright laws and fair use policies, and that some authors can grant ownership or use of their works to an extent or fully. As I think about who can actually be considered the author of an advertisement or literary work, I honestly thought that the person whom created the work should be considered the owner. However, I have realized that due to the fact the producer of the work made the literary work on company time and was compensated for it using the tools of the company, that piece of material will probably not be useable because it belongs to the private company that allowed the use of their tools for the creation and have already compensated the original author during company time. Thus it makes me think about all the documents or paperwork i have created, power points for classroom activities that could technically be the schools property because I made them on school property with their computers and was paid for my time to do it. It also made me think about teachers pay teacher website, and how there are school teachers creating documents, where they have made them I'm not sure of, but they are profiting from these works. Thus the question came up, could this be a problem under the companies rights. I think there are so many ways of becoming at fault when it comes to copyrights and fair use that we must acknowledge at all points where the motivation or creativity came from. Fair use policies focus on limiting the amount of copies that are made and we are in violation of fair use when it comes to taking away the opportunity for someone to be compensated for their works. The different license that are given are also important in knowing about because it determines how the works can be used and if we can create works that are in common or that have some of the same attributes. I think schools most commonly use the creative common license because it allows others to copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies not other interpretations so not to lose the value of the significance of the material or the message behind the original work. All in all I have learned a great deal about giving credit and learning the rights of my own works as well as others in general. It made me appreciate other peoples' time and creative works. We have all produced something we are proud of and want to be acknowledge for and it is only fair we be able to reap the benefits of coming up with our unique ideas but are able to share and allow others to grow to fix more problems in the world. After watching and reading articles supporting teaching and learning about what a digital footprint is and how we use it or don;t use it. I have realized that we depend on technology for some many things in our lives. Yes, it is beneficial, fast and efficient but sometimes, the things we post and share are sometimes to personal or we don't really realize how it may affect us outside of the site. Todays' generation post emotions, activities and just about anything they think is funny to show others how they are living and what they are going through. We do not always take into account the things we say can be misunderstood, taken in a way we didn't realize. Our actions reflect back on our jobs and those who our apart of our family and we must think about not only having citizenship outside of technology but also using it . After reading and listening to the recording on net neutrality, I honestly can see why it is such a big deal. Money controls almost every thing we do and now telecommunication companies like version and att what people to pay for the speed or the Internet and the access to look up different things. If people are to poor to afford clothes food and other things how can we now limit their power to be educated. This is a basic need for all people and it allows people that can not afford school to research and learn it themselves. I think limiting people and controlling something so pure is ridiculous and to be honest will only set the new generation backwards. If knowledge is power and we expect our future generation to make up for our mistakes then why with hold information from them.
I also thought about how creepy it is that we are basically being watched on how we spend money and what we search for online. I even noticed the same things on Netflix. For example, Netflix offers suggestions on what you should watch from previous movies. Therefore even if i like watching comedies or cartoons, but the most thing i watch is thriller action and scary movies. Netflix would only really show those types of movies and even say this movie is recommended because you watched this scary movie. So I thought, how many movies have I missed out on seeing or were never introduced to because of what i watched a previous day. The only reason I came up with is a person gets paid on the amount of times their movie gets played. Therefore, we have a better chance of getting the movie played from someone who watches scary movies. I think this is somewhat like net neutrality, because advertisements and other things pop up on a screen from previous searches and is like a tattoo that can't be erased. Overall I understand that i must watch what i do in public, what I post and say online, and what I search for because it will determine how people perceive me and what consequences may occur because of these negative situations. |
